LA MIRADA -- It didn't take long for the So Cal Shepherds (1-0, 1-0) to notch their first Sunset League victory. They defeated the South Bay Sliders (0-1, 0-1) in their first ever league contest Saturday afternoon at Biola University.

The Sliders struck first when Jesse Fonteboa (Golden West College) drew a walk and scored in the top of the 1st inning to make it a 1-0 game, but it was all Shepherds after that.

So Cal answered immediately in the bottom of the frame to knot it up at 1-1.

In the bottom of the 5th, the Shepherds plated one run to take a 2-1 lead. They scored three more in the 7th and tacked on one insurance run in the 8th to come away with the 6-1 win.

Phillip Wall (University of Northwestern - St. Paul) starred on the bump.  The Shepherd hurler tossed five innings, struck out four and earned his first win of the season.

In just the first game of the season, Sebastian Dunn (Florida State College of Jacksonville) has already perfected his lead-off role. Dunn reached base four out of five times (2 XBH, 2 BB), scored three runs and added an RBI.

Austin Caulk knocked in two, while Colton Back (Ashbury University), Clayton Espino (Kansas Wesleyan) and Chad Ragland (Florida State College of Jacksonville) each contributed one RBI.

The Shepherds have two days off, but host another league opponent, the Sparrows on Tuesday at 4:30 p.m.

The Sliders have a non-league matchup against the South Bay Saints on Sunday.
