VC Pirates, Redbirds Advance, IV Pirates Eliminated

LA MIRADA -- Another great day of playoff action is in the books.

In the first game, the #2 Solana Beach Redbirds defeated the #3 South Bay Sliders 10-0.

It was a tight 2-0 contest for most of the way until the Redbirds unleashed an eight-run seventh inning.

Keegan Wright (Saddleback College) was exceptional, tossing seven innings of shutout baseball and earning the win.

All-Star Game MVP Joseph Canty (Saddleback College) kept it rolling, ripping three RBI. Spencer Gedestad (UC Davis) contributed two RBI.

Zakk Morgan had two knocks for South Bay.

The Redbirds are now one win away from making the Sunset League Championship Series. Meanwhile, the loss meant the Sliders would face the Inland Valley Pirates later in the day.

In Game 2, the #1 Ventura County Pirates cruised to a 19-2 victory over the #5 Orange County Legends.

Ventura County jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first and never looked back, extending the margin to 10-0 by the fourth.

The Pirates sent four longballs out of the park including two from Blake Mann (UC Santa Barbara), and one from Jason Ajamian (LA Valley College) and Cole Kitchen (Santa Clara). The trio combined for 11 RBI. Keaton Glover (University of the Pacific) provided another three RBI.

Orange County was led by Aharon Modlin, who finished 4-for-4 with both of the Legends two RBI.

The Pirates advance and now need just one more win to make it to the Sunset League Championship Series.

The Legends will face the Sliders at 9:30 a.m. Thursday in the losers bracket. The winner of that game will play at 4:30 p.m. for a spot in the Sunset League Championship Series.

The final game of the day was an elimination game featuring the #6 Inland Valley Pirates and #3 South Bay Sliders.

The Sliders defeated the Pirates for the second time in the tournament and eliminated them from contention. The final was 16-7.

It didn't look like it would go that way for the Sliders, as they fell to a 7-0 deficit, but scored 16 unanswered runs including a 12-run sixth inning.

Eddie Zavala (Chico State) went 3-for-5 with five RBI. Alex Seguine went 3-for-4 with four RBI. Cody Wissler (Chico State) finished 3-for-5 with two RBI.

The Sliders advance to a game against the Legends at 9:30 a.m. Thursday and will have to win two games to make it to the Sunset League Championship Series.

The Inland Valley Pirates are the second team to be eliminated.

Another great day of baseball is ahead on Thursday!
