Pirates, Redbirds Advance, Legends, Sliders Eliminated

LA MIRADA -- Another day, another triple-header in the Sunset League Playoffs.

Thursday was the day that decided everything - two teams eliminated, and two teams heading to Cal State Fullerton on Saturday for the Sunset League Championship Series.

The first game was an elimination game between the #5 Orange County Legends and #3 South Bay Sliders.

Offensive fireworks was the norm as the Sliders won 19-10 to move on to a winner-takes-all elimination game later in the day.

In the second game, the Ventura County Pirates defeated the Solana Beach Redbirds 8-1.

The victory means the Pirates advance to the SBL Championship Series. Ventura County already won a regular season crown and is now looking to win its first ever Sunset League tournament championship.

The loss meant the Redbirds had to face the Sliders later in the day for a spot in the championship.

In the third game, the Sliders and Redbirds battled and were tied 1-1 heading to the bottom of the fifth, but that's where it all changed.

The Redbirds got a two-run fifth, followed by a four-run sixth to put the game away. Solana Beach won 10-2.

Ethan Hagen blasted a home run. Nick Hays (Occidental) added three RBI and scored twice.

Christian Wood (Orange Coast College) was solid, tossing six innings and only allowing one run on just two hits, while striking out four.

The top two seeds are now set for a best-of-three championship series starting Saturday night at 7 p.m. at Cal State Fullerton.

Each team is looking to claim its first Sunset League Championship.
