COMPTON, CA -- The Ventura County Pirates (1-0) defeated the MLB Academy Barons 4-2 Thursday night at the MLB Urban Youth Academy.

Kyle Soberano led the way with two RBI and Darren Kriz added one RBI.

Griffin Hagen (1-0) tossed five innings and struck out five. Alex Ravago hurled four scoreless innings and notched his first save of the season. 

The Pirates jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the first before the Barons knotted it up at 1 apiece in the bottom of the frame.

Ventura County tacked on two more runs in the fourth inning to grab a 3-1 lead. 

The Barons answered with one in the fifth to cut the deficit to 3-2, but that was as close as they would get as the Pirates plated one insurance run in the seventh to go ahead 4-2.

The two teams do battle again tomorrow at 6 p.m. at the MLB Urban Youth Academy.
