The OC Surf have made it to the SBL Championship for the second consecutive season after winning both games they played in the double elimination tournament at Cal Poly Pomona this week.
The Ventura County Pirates make their first appearance in the SBL Championship in their first season in the league.
These two teams have traded blows all season long, and in fact, split six games in the season series.
Pirates vs Surf Season Series (Tied 3-3)
Game 1, June 20
Surf 5, Pirates 2
The Surf got out to a quick 4-0 lead in the first inning and never looked back. Luke Hussung belted two RBI. Cooper Moore, Wyatt Hoppie and Bo Coolen each added one RBI.
Game 2, June 27
Surf 8, Pirates 7
In one of the wildest games of the season that had to be completed on a later date, this game had everything. Offense, defense and plenty of clutch performances by both sides.
The Pirates grabbed a 1-0 lead in the third. The Surf took a 2-1 lead in the fourth. The Pirates regained the lead in the sixth at 3-2. The Surf tied it up in the seventh 3-3.
Jake Selco crushed a two-run bomb in the eighth to give the Pirates a 5-3 lead and what looked to be the momentum, but not for long.
The OC Surf got a three-run homer in the ninth by Alex Dimascio to make it a 6-5 ballgame.
The Pirates showed resiliency on a Kobi Allen game-tying RBI to knot it up at 6-6 with two outs in the bottom of the ninth.
The teams played a scoreless 10th and finished on July 11th in the 12th inning. The Surf scored twice in the 12th, but the Pirates fought until the bitter end with one in the frame before they ultimately fell by a final of 8-7.
Game 3, July 11
Pirates 8, Surf 3
Myles Hager was the star of the game for the Pirates with a home run and three RBI. Griffin Hagen knocked in two RBI.
Wyatt Hoppie crushed a home run and two RBI.
Robert Stowell earned the win tossing five innings, striking out six and only allowing one run.
Game 4, July 22
Pirates 8, Surf 4
Griffin Hagen cranked a third inning grand slam and that was all the Pirates would need on this day. Myles Hager added two RBI as well.
For the Surf, Wyatt Hoppie knocked in two.
Game 5, July 22
Pirates 9, Surf 3
Myles Hager and Kyle Soberano led the way with two RBI apiece. Soberano and Jake Selco each scored twice.
Game 6, July 27
Surf 9, Pirates 1
In a playoff game, the Surf meant business early and often getting out to a 4-0 lead by the third inning.
Cooper Moore was the star of the game with two home runs. Alex Dimascio added two RBI. Justin Mellano scored twice.
