Legends Win Tough Playoff Opener

LONG BEACH -- The Long Beach Legends defeated the Signal Hill Oilers in a wild 9-7 slugfest Tuesday afternoon at Long Beach City College.

Long Beach got a clutch five-run 8th inning in their final at bat to move on in the winners bracket of the Sunset League Tournament.

Signal Hill got out to an early 2-0 lead in the 1st inning and extended it to 5-1 by the 5th inning.

The Legends fought back with two in the 6th, one in the 7th and five in the 8th.

Nolan Jekich blasted a home run. JT Navarro scored three times. Jake Scott belted three RBI and Aaron Takacs ripped two RBI.

The Oilers were led by Zachary Rivas' three hits and three RBI. Christopher Gann and AJ Mayeda each contributed two hits and one RBI.

The Legends will play the Ventura County Pirates Wednesday at 4:30 p.m. for a spot in the SBL Championship Series.

The Oilers face the Sparrows in an elimination game Thursday at 1 p.m. at Long Beach City College. The winner of that game will get another shot at making the Championship at 4:30 p.m. Thursday against the loser of Wednesday's game.
